3D Cone Beam Imaging

We believe in investing in technology that will allow you to achieve your oral health objectives while having a pleasant visit at our Chapel Hill Dental Office. That’s why we provide panoramic x-rays and cone-beam 3D scans. Cone beam 3D imaging is a relatively recent technological advancement that allows our dentist to see clear, three-dimensional pictures of your teeth, as well as the bones and soft tissues that surround them. The name “cone-beam” comes from the fact that the x-ray beam is shaped like a cone, as opposed to a fan-shaped x-ray beam. The information is passed through the mouth in a cone-shaped beam, which absorbs nearly 600 “slices” of data. After that, complex software puts all of this information together into three-dimensional renderings.

The 3D image is more helpful than older two-dimensional x-rays because the image can be moved so that the dentist can see a picture of your teeth and jawbone from any angle. We might take a 3D image for one or more of the following reasons:

  • To ensure accurate placement of dental implants
  • Determining the best course of treatment when considering a root canal
  • Planning tooth extractions
  • Evaluating sinuses
  • Fractures
  • TMJ Diagnosis
  • Exploring and diagnosing unknown pain in the jaw

Getting a 3D cone beam scan is simple and only takes a few minutes. There are no side effects, and there’s no need to be apprehensive or prepare in advance. We’ll just request that you remove any metal jewelry like earrings to ensure we get the clearest picture possible.
